I'm a writer and certified English teacher with more than twenty years of classroom experience. I write fiction, creative nonfiction, and literary criticism, and I help students become thoughtful, confident writers -- and excellent self-editors.Strong writing grows from careful reading. My lessons combine literature, rhetoric, and composition using a mentor-text approach that helps students discover how accomplished writers work in the real world.Whether we're refining a college essay, preparing for an AP exam, or developing a story or a poem, my goal is to help each student produce writing that is powerful, precise, and original by giving them examples from great literature.My students have gotten into great summer writing programs like Interlochen, Iowa Young Writers' Studio, and the NYTimes Summer Academy, as well as undergraduate programs at Duke, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Northwestern, and the University of Pennsylvania. They have also been admitted to prestigious graduate, medical, nursing, and dental schools.My philosophy is that personal attention can foster great young writers. I teach kids to read like writers, think critically, and communicate with clarity and originality.
